Bounce or Break? It's YOUR choice!
Bounce or Break? It’s YOUR choice!

A common misconception about the top 1% in anything is that they are problem-free.  Actually, the opposite is generally true.  The higher up the ladder of success you go, the bigger the problems and the more insurmountable the challenges.

Successful people know that they will face problems and challenges on the way up, yet they press on anyways.  What successful people do differently than everyone else is bounce.  And by bounce, I mean that every time a person, event, circumstance or random occurrence attempts to bring them down, they immediately bounce back up even higher than they were before they started their decent.

Picture a rubber ball being held out in front of you 3 feet high.  If you were to throw the ball down at the ground from that position, the ball is likely to bounce all the way back up to 6 or 8 feet after hitting the bottom.  The same holds true in the lives of successful people.

Regardless of the problems and challenges that you are currently faced with, you must remember that your ticket to the next level of success lies somewhere in solving those problems and overcoming those challenges.  If someone or something is pulling you down, don’t break.  Picture that bouncy ball and rebound back up even higher.

I can tell you from personal experience that the majority of my greatest wins in life came in response to some of my biggest failures.  Problems will always present themselves to you, even when you reach the top.  But your view of those problems and response to them will ultimately determine your success in life.  My advice to you:  Bounce, don’t break!

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Tough Mudder, Virginia
Tough Mudder, Virginia: The ceremonial piling of worn-out shoes from finishing the course with your team

Several years ago I joined a business organization led by author and business consultant Loral Langemeier. Her book titled The Millionaire Maker is one that I recommend you read, if you haven’t already.

One of the quotes that she used during her seminar was “You have to do it yourself, and you can’t do it alone”.

I have found that quote to hold true in every facet of life.

If you are trying to reach the top 1% in anything, you are going to need help along the way. In my book, I have an entire section dedicated to the importance of saying “Please” and “Thank You”. Simply saying please and thank you whenever you require the assistance of someone else will greatly increase your chances of getting additional assistance in the future. I realize the simplicity involved in these words, yet I also know the importance of them and the lack of their use in daily conversation.

Everyone teaches their kids to say “please” and “thank you”, yet very few people practice what they preach. Regardless, this is one ESSENTIAL step that you must take right now to move towards where you want to be.

As Loral says, you CAN’T be successful alone. To reach your potential, you need to not only gain the help of others, but you must inspire them along the way with your vision for what is possible.

At the same time, the real work must still be done by YOU! You have to put in the extra effort. You must be willing to sacrifice your comfort zone to achieve your potential. You need to be willing to go the extra mile each and every day to achieve your goals. And without question, you MUST be willing to Become the person that you need to Become in order to do the things you want to do in life and have the things you want to have.

When faced with your next challenge, or when faced with the possibility of taking action or being complacent, remember Loral’s quote.

Enlist the help of others to help you reach your goals, and at the same time, be willing to take immediate action yourself to do what you are capable of doing in order to reach the top.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Personal Success: What’s ahead?

Sunset in Maui

Sunset in Maui: My picture of success

Your future or your past…  which is more important?

Your past has defined you up to this point.  All of things that have happened to you, all of the people that you have met and all of the decisions you have made have determined who you are right now.  And as we all know, try as we may, we can’t change the past.

Your future however, is unlimited!  If you don’t like what you do, who you have become or what you have, you can change things today by changing the same 3 things that have gotten you to this point.

If you don’t like what you do, then change your path by learning from your past mistakes.  You can do anything in the world that you want to do.  You are bound by nothing.  It doesn’t matter how long you have worked at the same job, how successful or unsuccessful you have been or what anyone else thinks about what you do.  If you aren’t happy, change your path by learning from your past experiences and making different decisions as you move forward.  Past events in your life don’t have to define you and what you do.  Instead, YOU define the past events by continuing with those things that helped your life and learning from/omitting those things that brought you down.

If you don’t like who you are, think about associating with different people.  Don’t be afraid to upgrade you friends.  If the people you are currently spending time with aren’t willing to change their own path and make the same progress that you hope for, then find new friends.  It’s as simple as that.  There are literally thousands of people wanting to become better people.  There are groups and businesses and churches and organizations completely dedicated to bringing people together that want to better themselves.  If you aren’t happy with the person you have become up to this point, change your associations and change your life.

If you don’t like what you have, then change your decisions.  The financial decisions you have made up to this point about how you make money and how you spend money have defined your current status.  If you are broke, guess what… your choices have stunk!  Doubling your income is a great goal for anyone, but if you don’t change your decisions, you will still spend too much and end up broke again.  Cutting your expenses would also be a great goal for anyone, but it you don’t change your ability to earn more money, inflation will pass you up and you will still end up broke.  If you want to have more of what life has to offer, then make different decisions about how you earn money and how you spend your money.

You can be, do and have more.  You deserve to be, do and have more.  You were meant to be, do and have more.

Change your decisions, evaluate the people you spend time with and make sure your are surrounding yourself with the right people and learn from your past to create the future you want.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Rev. Nate Carr, Olympic Bronze Medalist

Rev. Nate Carr, Olympic Bronze Medalist

One of my favorite people in the world is my former coach Nate Carr.  As a former Olympic Bronze Medalist in wresting, Nate is a true inspiration to people worldwide, both as an athlete and a person.

One of the great lessons that I ever learned from Coach Carr was to “speak the end at the beginning.”  That is, to focus on where you are going and where you want to be instead of where you are currently.  Having been around some of the most successful people in the world, I can tell you that without exception, the ultra-successful spend the majority of their time thinking, speaking and focusing on where they are going.  Their energy is placed on things that will get them closer to what they want to do, what they want to have and who they want to be.

Brian Tracy refers to this as “back from the future thinking.”  Simply picture where you want your life to be in 5 years from now, and then work backwards to develop the plan that you will need to get there.  Break the 5 year plan into one-year increments and the one-year increments into short-term monthly goals.  Before you know it, you will have become the person that you want to be.  You will have the things you want to have.  You will be doing the things you want to do.

Regardless of how your life has turned out up to this point, you can change things in an instant.  And that instant can be right now.  Focus on where you would like to be in 5 years from now, then decide that you will do whatever it takes to get there.

And like I learned from Coach Carr years ago, have fun during the process.  If you want to be a champion, yet you are not one yet, begin to act and smile as though you are.  If you want to be wealthy, but you are currently broke, focus on the feeling you will have when you become rich.  If you want to have the perfect job or own the perfect business, but you are currently unemployed, focus on the joy and freedom that you will one day have when you are doing what you were always meant to do.

All of these things are easy to do when you have confidence in your future.   When you know where you are going.  When you make the decision that failure is not an option.  When you decide that you deserve success.  Regardless of where you are, consider today your new beginning.  5 years from now, when your life is perfect in every way, what will it look like? That is your end.  Now speak the end at the beginning and focus on where you are going.  Your future is now certain!

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

These in greater supply than you realize! Read on to find out how you can get more of them.

These are in greater supply than you realize! Read on to find out how you can get more of them.

There’s more than enough money to go around.  The “Poverty Complex” is a term used to describe the feeling that there’s not enough money out there for you to earn, or that other people don’t have enough money to pay for your service or product.  It’s called a “complex” for a reason… because it’s not true.

The fact is that there is enough money floating around in our economy (yes, even in our current economy) for everyone to have their share of the money available.  The difference between those that continue to make money right now versus those that do not is simply their attitude about what’s available.

When I was first starting out in business, I went to every seminar that I could find.  And seeing as how I opened in the fall, I was extremely interested in determining how to spend my marketing dollars in the winter months in order to meet my overhead.  Unfortunately, the consensus from all of the “Gurus” in my field was that you should NOT advertise in the winter.  The reason being that a small business like mine could not compete with all of the larger companies when it came to Christmas-time advertising.

So, as instructed, I pulled all of my marketing through the winter.  And as you might expect, my business declined as I had a decrease in the number of new people coming to my clinic.

By the end of my first year, I began realize that if I were going to be successful, then I needed to have a continual stream of customers throughout the year.  This included the winter months.  So, I decided to try something different during the following winter months.  Instead of pulling all of my advertising, I actually increased my marketing efforts in the Christmas-time months.  And, as you might have expected, my business increased in new customers and profits.

You see, everyone else in my field was all drinking the same Kool-aid.  Everyone else listened to the gurus and removed their advertisements in the winter months as they advised.  When I decided that I was going to continue to attempt to grow my business throughout every single month in the year, including the winter months, I was faced with absolutely NO advertising competition in my field.  My thought process changed to focusing on the potential gains rather than the potential problems.

The same holds true when it comes to your finances.  The moment that you realize that money is always available to anyone that is willing to earn it, you will begin to have more of it.  If you listen to the media telling you that there are no jobs, no money and no hope, that’s exactly what you will get.

But when you realize that there are hundreds of thousands of people that are still making money hand-over-fist in this, and every other economy, you too can share in the action.  Stop listening to the downers and start living the life that you want.  Don’t ever let a poverty “complex” keep you from reaching your financial goals.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Business Success: Over-deliver

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The Greenbrier Hotel. Over-delivering day after day in the hills of West VirginiaThe Greenbrier Hotel, tucked away in the hills of West Virginia, over-delivers to its guests day after day, year after year.

One of the key rules to succeeding in business is to “Under-promise and Over-deliver.”  Whether you own your own business or are employed by someone else, this principle rarely occurs without focused effort.

The two main aspects of the over-delivery process should occur around your clients’ 2 main concerns:  Time and Money.

If you think their product will take 4 days to get to them, tell them 6.  If you think it will take them 4 weeks to see the benefit of your product or service, tell them it will take 6.  If you think their visit to your office will take them 15 minutes, tell them 30.  If you think the benefits of the product or service will last for 4 months, tell them that it will last them 2 months.  Customers, clients and patients take what you say to heart.  Though you may just be making generalizations when you speak to them, they take every single thing you say literally.  Make it a habit to under-promise and over-deliver when it comes to the aspect of time when utilizing your business’ service or product.

Also do the same with the money aspect.  Give your customers, clients and patients more than they pay for.  Make it a habit to always go above and beyond to same them money and over-deliver on your customer service.  Though the habit of giving more than they pay for may cost you a little more initially, you will make it back many times over by creating loyal customers and people that want their friends, family members and colleagues to do business with you.

Remember to always put yourself in your customers’ place.  Would your service or product justify the price you charge for it?  Could it justify twice the price?  Would your service or product justify the time it would take to receive the benefits or the duration of those benefits?  Could it justify twice the price?

When your product could justify twice the fee that you currently charge, your business will begin to explode.  Everyone will know that you over-deliver when other do business with you.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Business Success: Time is Money

Posted by: | Comments (0)
Grow your own business by saving people time and money

Grow your own business by saving people time and money

If you want to have more success in your business, you need to give your customers, clients or patients what they want.  When I say that, most people’s thought goes directly to the product or service that they provide.

But in a broader view, what does virtually everyone really want?

Virtually everyone would like more money and virtually everyone would like more time.  Sure, they may need your product or service, but what they really want is more money and more time.

Today, take a few moments to focus on how your business can increase, whether directly or indirectly, the financial status of your customers.  Also, determine how you can save them precious time in the process.

For example, as a physician, your patients want to get back to enjoying life.  No one likes to take time out of their schedule to go to the doctor.  And no one likes the thought of being in pain to the point of missing out on the joys of life.  Also, no one likes to miss work and not receive a paycheck.  If you can determine that the procedures in your business will be efficient enough to get the patient in and out of your office without taking all day, as well as get the patient back to work or increase their health to a point that their work-life will be extended, you are on your way to making the connection between saving your patients time and making them more money.

Then, the task becomes finding ways to convey that message to your current and potential patients.  When you can teach people about the benefits of doing business with you, especially when those benefits are related to time and money, you will have an endless stream of new business.

This is also a good reminder to look at your own use of time and money.  Nearly everyone could use a good financial clean-up where you discontinue those bad financial habits or expenditures that are unneccesary in your life.  And nearly everyone could use a good daily time audit to determine where you are wasting precious moments of your day.  When you truly respect your own time and money, you will be more easily able to respect the time and money of your customers.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Personal Success: Enough is Enough

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Success Coach Anthony Robbins

Anthony Robbins has studied and taught on the subject of motivation for decades now.  All of his research indicates that people will do more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure.

With this information now available to you, you need to start associating “good” with pain and “great” with pleasure.

“Good is the enemy of great.”
The first key to achieving your full potential is to accept nothing less than the absolute best for yourself and from yourself.  If you are not yet where you want to be, it’s time to say “Enough is Enough!”  Enough of just being OK.  Enough of having things that are just OK.  Enough of doing things OK.  Great is what you deserve to be, do and have.  Accept nothing less for and from yourself.
If you can tie the feeling of pain to being good and the feeling of pleasure to being great, you will have the stage set for an unstoppable future.
What I have found in applying this knowledge to my own life is that I must take the time to picture what being good looks like and immediately associate the feeling of pain.
I have done this so much that the thought of just being ok nearly makes me physically ill.  I have also worked to associate tremendous joy with being great at what I do.
By associating these feelings so intensely, I no longer have to think about whether I really want to be good or great.  Complacency is gone!  I will accept nothing less than “great” for myself.  And, the feeling of pain is so associated with being average that I will do almost anything to keep from just be “good.”
Start today with picturing exactly what you want to be, do and have in your life.  Begin to picture how you will feel when you accomplish these things. How will you feel when you ARE great?  How will you feel when you HAVE great things?  How will you feel when you are great at what you DO?
If the feelings associated with your wants are strong enough and the purpose behind your desires are to help others in the process, nothing will be impossible for you.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Our daughter The Dreamer

Our daughter The Dreamer

Children get it!  Each night in a child’s mind there are spectacular visions of what is possible.  But at some point in our youth, the dreaming stops and reality sets in.

But in the minds of the ultra-successful, the dreaming never stops.  The vision of what is possible is constant.

Don’t be afraid to dream.  If you don’t have a dream, it’s hard to turn your dream into a reality.  If you don’t have a vision for what is possible, though it may realistically seem impossible, there’s no way you’ll ever achieve it.  Walt Disney was quoted as saying “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”  Don’t worry about what others say is possible.  Don’t worry about your present reality.  The only thing that matters is the vision of your own possibilities. Don’t be afraid to dream great dreams.  Don’t be afraid to dream of a life that no one else has ever had.  Don’t be afraid to dream of doing something that no one else has done.  Don’t be afraid to dream of having something that no one else has ever had.

Greatness begins with dreams.  Athletic success begins with a dream.  Academic success begins with a dream.  Business success begins with a dream.  Leadership success begins with a dream.  Parenting success begins with a dream.  Financial success begins with a dream.  Everything great that mankind has ever accomplished began with a dream.

If you want to achieve success in your own life and in your own endeavors, you have to go back to dreaming.  Set aside some time each day to dream of the life that you want.  Dream of where you’ll be in 5 years from now.  Dream of where you’ll be in 20 years from now.  And once you have the dream in mind, focus on it daily and become the kind of person that you will need to be in order to achieve that dream.

You did it as a child, and it’s time to do it again!

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Charles Barkely

NBA Great Charles Barkley

In order for you to continue to move up the ladder of success, you must continue to improve as a leader.  Regardless of what you plan to do, you will not be able to do it alone.  Even if what you are planning to do is an individual task, you will undoubtedly need to have a team of people to help you prepare.  Therefore, you must continue to develop as a leader if you hope to lead your team in order to get where you want to go.

Many people do not want to be in a leadership position.  People say they want success, but aren’t willing to take on a leadership role.  It doesn’t work that way!  You have to be a leader and you must be willing to take on a larger leadership role in order to become more successful.  And the greater leader you become, the more success you will have.

Years ago there was a commercial with the basketball player Charles Barkley in which he said “I am not a role model.”  The problem was that it was too late to make that statement.  He may not have wanted to be a role model and may not have seen himself as a role model, but with the success that he had already earned in the sport, it was impossible for him to not be a role model.

The same holds true for you.  If you want to be successful in sports, academics, business, finance or any other aspect of life, you need to get comfortable with being considered by others, as well as considering yourself, a leader.  But the term leader should not intimidate you.  You are already a leader.  I’ll guarantee that you have at least one person in the world already that watches what you do.  Whether it’s a spouse, a child, a classmate, a teammate, a friend, a family member, a coworker, an employee or an employer… someone is already watching you.

So instead of avoiding the role of a leader, take control of the title by realizing that you are already leading people in your daily life now.  In order to climb the ladder of success, all you need to do is get comfortable with leading more people.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!
