Tough Mudder, Wintergreen, Virginia

Recently my wife and I (along with my brother-in-law, mother-in-law and father-in-law) completed an event called the Tough Mudder.  It is a 10+ mile obstacle course with 26 different obstacles designed to challenge your courage and willingness to finish the race.

After 4 hours, we were able to complete the course with our entire team accounted for.  After having trained for several weeks prior to the event to make sure that we were physically prepared, the end of the race left only one question in my mind:  “What’s Next?”

What I have learned from some of the most successful people in the world is that they are never finished learning and growing.  As soon as successful people achieve a goal, the next thing they ask themselves is “What’s Next?”

So, immediately after the race was finished, we began planning the next event.  We checked the Tough Mudder off of our list (though we may do it again), and have already moved onto the next challenge.

If you think that you have reached the top in your field and that you have earned the right to become complacent, let me be the first to tell you that there’s always a higher level for which to strive.  The best athletes, the best students and the best businessmen know that there is always room for improvement.  As the saying goes, “If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.”

Regardless of where you are in your life right now, you can begin this moment to control your own future by simply asking yourself “What’s Next?”  Once you have the answer to that question, begin to do something each and every day to move you closer to the acquisition of that goal.

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

What do these goldfish have to do with your success?

What do these goldfish have to do with your success?

Did you know that the size that a goldfish will grow to be is completely dependent upon the size of its bowl?

That’s right, if you take a goldfish and place it in a small container, the goldfish will remain small in order to keep from out-growing the container.  But, if you take the same goldfish and place it in a large pond, the goldfish will continue to grow and grow, knowing that it doesn’t have to worry about getting too big.

How big is your bowl right now?  Are you a big fish in a little pond, afraid to step out of your comfort zone and attempt something bigger?  Or are you willing to become a little fish in a big pond in which you can continue to grow and expand your life.

I’ve watched hundreds, if not thousands, of athletes over the years afraid to take the next step.  They are a big deal in their small town, but they are unwilling to take on the risk of stepping out of their comfort zone to take on bigger and better competition out of town or out of state.  So, they continue to hit their ceiling and never really see how much better they could actually be by surrounding themselves with even better competition.

In business, I have watched one business owner after another grow to a certain level and then stop.  They grow to a point where they have maximized their company’s growth with their current knowledge base.  What they fail to do is to step outside of their comfort zone and seek help from larger businesses outside of their immediate surroundings.    If you want to continue to grow your business, you need to realize that you do NOT already know everything there is to know, that there are most likely larger, more successful businesses in your field from which to learn from and that if you want to continually grow your business, you need to expand your learning opportunities in order to grow your own base of knowledge.

It’s a big world out there.

If you are willing to dive into the deep end of the pool now and then, you will find that you are capable of doing much more than you are currently doing.  The real key is to not be afraid of becoming a little fish in a big pond.  Surrounding yourself with more successful people and businesses is the only way that you will continue to grow.  And those big time people that are often called “Big Fish”… where do you think they started?

Every big fish was once a little fish in a big pond.  The little fish continued to learn and grow until eventually they became BIG.

Step out of your comfort zone.  Try something new.  Surround yourself with more successful people than you currently do.  Be willing to become a little fish in a big pond for a while.  Your continued growth requires that you continually expand your boundaries and expectations.  In short, jump into a larger bowl!

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!

Rev. Nate Carr, Olympic Bronze Medalist

Rev. Nate Carr, Olympic Bronze Medalist

One of my favorite people in the world is my former coach Nate Carr.  As a former Olympic Bronze Medalist in wresting, Nate is a true inspiration to people worldwide, both as an athlete and a person.

One of the great lessons that I ever learned from Coach Carr was to “speak the end at the beginning.”  That is, to focus on where you are going and where you want to be instead of where you are currently.  Having been around some of the most successful people in the world, I can tell you that without exception, the ultra-successful spend the majority of their time thinking, speaking and focusing on where they are going.  Their energy is placed on things that will get them closer to what they want to do, what they want to have and who they want to be.

Brian Tracy refers to this as “back from the future thinking.”  Simply picture where you want your life to be in 5 years from now, and then work backwards to develop the plan that you will need to get there.  Break the 5 year plan into one-year increments and the one-year increments into short-term monthly goals.  Before you know it, you will have become the person that you want to be.  You will have the things you want to have.  You will be doing the things you want to do.

Regardless of how your life has turned out up to this point, you can change things in an instant.  And that instant can be right now.  Focus on where you would like to be in 5 years from now, then decide that you will do whatever it takes to get there.

And like I learned from Coach Carr years ago, have fun during the process.  If you want to be a champion, yet you are not one yet, begin to act and smile as though you are.  If you want to be wealthy, but you are currently broke, focus on the feeling you will have when you become rich.  If you want to have the perfect job or own the perfect business, but you are currently unemployed, focus on the joy and freedom that you will one day have when you are doing what you were always meant to do.

All of these things are easy to do when you have confidence in your future.   When you know where you are going.  When you make the decision that failure is not an option.  When you decide that you deserve success.  Regardless of where you are, consider today your new beginning.  5 years from now, when your life is perfect in every way, what will it look like? That is your end.  Now speak the end at the beginning and focus on where you are going.  Your future is now certain!

You were put here for a purpose, you are greater than you realize and your future will be filled with unlimited opportunities when you decide to become unstoppable.

Be Unstoppable!
